BlockBuddies
Game Assets
Instead of working on the next tutorial I spent the weekend working on some easy to use game assets. Now I am wondering if there is interest for something like it.
So far I have done 16 sets of ~50 frames (each in 4 sizes from S (64×64) to XL (256×256)) covering zombies, cowboys, adventurer, soldiers and the odd blue alien with samurai, ninja, Romans and a range of animals in the pipeline.

[Click to get to the character sheets]
The sets sell for USD 15.00 with the bundles (containing 3 characters) selling at USD 37.50 and two character sets going for USD 20.00.
Here’s a sample sheet of the Block Buddies Dummy character:

[box (6 frames), kneel, doze, fall flat, ko, big gun [stand and crouch], gun [stand and crouch], flat, flying after a knock, idle, jump, jump high, jump higher, jump joy, jump land, jump far, push, run (8 frames), sit, stab, walk (8 frames)]
Here’s the download link for the png files.
Great collection of character sheet!
I'm wondering, do the buyer also receive the original file in inkscape/gimp format?
That way the developer can also customize it according to their specific need and also study it more intensively. In a way, I think this is also a form of study material for fellow developer :)
Good luck with this!
The source file is actually not Inkscape but CorelDraw. I made use of some CorelDraw specific functions like multiple pages, layer naming and symbols to allow for easier creation of large sheets. Also the export is a little more accurate – allowing the creation of multi-layered psd files.
Oh, ok. Thanks for the confirmation. So does the buyer received the source file or not?
Btw, I think the download link for the Dummy png files is broken. The page only show error message :)
You shouldn't have made such good tutorials, i don't think that anybody who followed them will need to buy this xD
This is, however, a great way of showing appreciation for your valuable job. As long as we can pay with paypal I'll buy a couple myself.
Awesome assets, I would definitely buy a few.
I fixed the link and no… I probably won't give away the source files but will offer 'custom art' instead to add to the sets… and yes.. paypal will definitely be the way to go.
They look awesome. I really like the style. Do you plan to add also other stuff e.g. vehicles in the same style? I'm currently searching some military characters, so I'd use your soldiers from above, but I'd also need things like tanks, aircrafts etc. Maybe you open for customer specific needs?
wow sprite sheets ,hey do u make custom sprites? how can i hire u ;) ?
im thinking abt making a game for wp7 soon ..
@Weigo – yes… I will be adding to those and taking on custom requests… I can add things like this
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-imIa8gArT0E/Tu_QNzXoVBI/AAAAAAAAAWA/rAN2Yy-tbV8/s512 BlockBuddies_Soldiers_extrasJeep.jpg
as well as alternative weapons (sniper rifles, bazookas, etc.)
@Kamalesh – just email me… ;)
Wow!!! Awesome artwork!!! I really like your BlockBuddies Bundle, could you email me more information of what will I get for the USD$15?

thanks,

I added the sheets to the blog – the big BlockBuddies image in the top right with the the 'Click Here' brings you to the character sheets.
[Currrently I am getting an error with the last two bundle pages – blogger.com doesn't like me anymore… but I am going to fix it asap]
Wow, the jeep looks also awesome. I'm really looking forward to see more of your work and I'm curious what sprites like the jeep or vehicles in general will cost (also customization to individual sets). Great work!
BTW, I actually plan a game with a top-down perspective (via cocos2d). Is it possible to get also sprites for such a game?
I would totally buy your sprite packs. Just announce when they are ready to be sold!
@D.Hayes – they are ready. Click on the BlockBuddies image at the top right and it lead to the character shets.
I don't understand if Dummy character it's free? I don't see paypal button but directly link for download
The Dummy is FREE – a christmas present from me!
Btw. if you have already downloaded it please doing it again as I updated the file and fixed an error in the walk animation.
Sprite Attack,
Are we allowed to recreate these designs using the dummy one as a template. So could I use the dummy as a template and then recreate your designs to use for a game? So I would have created them from scratch using the dummy template but they would be very very similar to your designs.
Best Regards
I would prefer you just parted with US$15 and bought a set ;)
AccessDenied if I try to download dummy
Yeah Ill probably just buy a set. How many of each have sold? I want to get the least popular ones. That way there will be less games with the graphics that I decide to buy
@Anonymous – fixed the access [a bit rusty with the amazon management console – simply forgot to change the access after replacing the file]
@Steve – no worries… so far they have all been unpopular… ;
OK lol
They are really good so I hope that they sell really well. You deserve some recognition for all the helpful tutorials you have done and all the nice work you have done
Hey Buddy, it's mynameisace. Can you sort me out a bundle price for every single sprite sheet? My email address is mynameisace@me.com if you can email me a price. Thanks!
I would be very intrested in these but for me even the xl size is too small. Would buy if bigger or source, eps included or a 512x 512 size.
Really like the site and the tutorials
Not a problem… I can't give out the eps but 512×512 is no problem at all… even larger if you need them… ;)
Hi SpriteAttack,
I was wondering if I am allowed to use the dummy sprites in a game that I am making. I am then wanting to sell the game. Is this OK as you did say that the Dummy images were free.
Thank you and best regards
George
Go for it, George. The Dummy is free to use as you like. Good luck with the game.
Thank You,
Will post on here if it sells with a link to the game.
I bought one of the bundles but I haven't received a download link.
Thanks, Chris… Please give me some time to sleep… I am in Australia and had a good night's rest while you ordered… I will email you the art right away. :)
Awesome art im just in two minds to purchase it or not as your art is such high quality i dont have the backgrounds and environments to match it :(
question about this sprite how can I use this to gamesalad to make animation.. do I need to cut one by one graphic
They are all separate files on the same size canvas (and for GS there is a flipped version as well).
Download the dummy archive and check it out… There is a zip on opengameart.org:
https://opengameart.org/sites/default/files/Dummy_0.zip
Enjoy!
Hello Chris my name is Jake and I might like to get some custom game art please give me an email so we can talk as I can't find it here on the site
Hi Jake… I will have to fix that – since the change to google+ the bio has disappear… c(dot)hildenbrand(at)gmail(dot)com
Why R U such a crybaby on the GameSalad forums? U complain about us kids and then you rip us off! Y?
Awesome what about a female set.
Can I use them with in game format.
Yes… I should make some more females ;)
Yes… they are separate png files and you should be able to use them in pretty much any game engine or your own coded asset manager.
I am not sure why you think I am ripping anyone off… I am providing a free blog filled with game art tutorials – how's that a tip off ? I do see some of the stuff a what I consider extremely fair prices. I got annoyed with GameSalad forum users because they don't just use the tutorials but steal straight from my games with Utopian Games or BigBananaApps. There is a fine line between taking inspiration from the work of others or following tutorials and plain stealing the design. A lot of the members of the GS forum don't know the difference or basic common manners.
All art should be free honestly, this is the internet
Which means that because it is on the internet it has now real value?
I just use whatever I find, that's life
If you make an RPG style sheet that includes up and down I would buy every single pack.
can we use the dummy one for free? or will you sue us?
hey chris.
thanks for the dummy!!
you can see him in action in my new game "bubblr – dummy in trouble":
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.philweb.bubblr
you will find yourself in the credits ;)
maybe i can polish the game a bit with some more of your block buddies …
bye
phil
It would be much better to just have one texture with the entire animation set on it. Why did you cut everything up?
It depends on the. Game engine you re using (e.g. Gamesalad or scurry import separate images). Thee are heaps of tools out tree to create sprutesheetsbut once it's a sheet it's a proper pain and a half to separate the sprites again.
Hi mate, some of your sprites are really appealing to the project I am working on and I would like to use some of them. However, i do not have money right now to purchase it. But if i would buy it, am I getting anything else other than what i seen on your page? which by the way just to pint it out to you i just clicked on and saved it on my laptop. So my other question is, since i have it already, can i use it ?
You really need to disable option to save images from your website, right now anyone can have them without paying. That might be the reason why u did not get much money from it.
I am not doing this blog for the money, mate. This is for fun and to share my knowledge and help others… just because it makes me feel good. ;)
LOL… nice one… yes… you get the editable source files with the tutorials and the with the blockbuddies the complete set of frames in 4 sizes as transparent png-files. Seeing you already have it, still doesn't mean you can use it, should use it or have the legal right to use it… but you seem to have the 'internet mentally of what's available for free is free to use in whatever way you want'. I do this blog for fun… to help those coders (and artists) out there who want to learn to do basic art for their game. The idea is to teach in the tutorials how to do the art yourself rather than plain steal it from me.
To break it done nice and clear – NO – you can't just use the screengrabs, saved jpgs and blurry post images…
but
YES – you can recreate them easily with inkscape… or create something similar to use in your games… or
BUY – the tutorial assets and get svg files that you can alter, scale, modify in any way shape or form you like and use in your projects.
Hi Chris
Thought you might like to check out my latest game featuring your art – 4 Games 1 Screen.

Your block buddy cowboy is the main character in the infinite scrolling jumping platformer game. Hope you like it :)
Hi Chris,
I found your website from your few posts over at the Inkscape Forums. Specifically, https://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10539&sid=2b0b1c7d1a5c1729feab9c072ef32162 which I can't believe I've overlooked up until now. Especially since I've actually googled for tutorials like yours but your site never did come up.
Aside from that, I can't believe the jerks that think it's just OK to save your graphics and go ahead and use them commercially (I mean HEY, they ARE on the internet, right? Well geez, it must be FREE to use then, right? Oh and by the way, even though they STOLE YOUR graphics for their games, they will be selling those games with YOUR graphics in them. F'n IDIOTS!).
I can tell You put a lot of work into your graphics and with all the AWESOME tutorials you provide, they could simply learn how to do most of this stuff in FREE software and then simply use their own graphics instead of stealing from you. What a bunch of morons!
I swear some people think that if you use free software to make your graphics, you should simply just GIVE them AWAY for free. Forget ALL the TIME and creativity you put into the work, you should always give everything away for free. Your time and creativity means nothing since you are using FREE software. While you're at it can't you just make the games for them too and give them away too? That way they can SELL YOUR WORK and claim it ALL as their own. You shouldn't have a problem with that, right?
I mean they did search the internets and took the time to find your site and steal your graphics. I can't imagine why you aren't just sending money to your visitors simply for coming to your site and doing you the favor of stealing from you (SARCASM).
Anyway Chris, I'm truly greatful for your AWESOME site and all the FREE tutorials you offer out of the goodness of your heart. I for one would like to THANK YOU for everything you do. Keep up the good work buddy!
If I had ANY clue how to make a game, I would definitely by your assets and who knows, maybe one of these days I will learn how to make my own games and then I WILL buy from you. Until such time, I will learn FROM you how to make nice graphics.
Thanks again for ALL you do!
Thanks, MrSmiles… It's my pleasure… I enjoy writing and sharing the ideas, tricks and knowledge – and sometimes the ramblings…
Stealing art happens, has happened in the past and will happen again… It's part of the internet… sadly…
Hi Chris,
I am planning on buying the adventurer sprites shortly but I was wondering if you are planning on adding some more. Specifically dragons? I had to Change my iPhone app to adventurer theme because I could not find a cute dragon sprites.
Thanks for the great work you do here!
Mo
Awesome graphic, the crash dummy became a center piece of the game we released :)
Also used your household block items, probably in a way you would not have imagined ;)
https://jenots.com/dummy-town
Great work pal, thank you for sharing this great assets. Anyway i found https://mobilegamegraphics.com/ They have a bunch of assets and freebies.
I know this post is old, but I really don't know WHERE that post above came from!?! – I have to agree with you there Chris – No 'rip-off' about it, unbelievable! – You're a great help on the forums, and it makes sense to try and get SOMETHING back for your hard work and talent – but yes, sadly, a lot of what you say is true, a LOT of take, and not much give, with that mainly only being given by a select few heroes like yourself… :(
Japster
Keep at it fella, sadly I currently have no need for your littles guys, but they look great, and I wish you the best!
