Creating seamless patterns for tileable textures
Inkscape video tutorial
I got sidetracked again by a reader’s request. It’s a nice and easy to follow video tutorial. It shows a simple trick to easily create seamless patterns in Inkscape. Due to the complexity I had to split the video up. Covering the game art part for the creation of grass, dirt or water tiles would make the video way too long. I just outlined the basic idea in this tutorial. The game art related creations will get separate videos.

Note:
The tutorial works best with plain coloured backgrounds. Keep your shapes smaller than the tiling square. Bigger objects can cause problems when tiling.
I hope you enjoyed this quick tip. The next video will use the basics covered here and I will make ground and grass tiles for use in top down games.

The quality of the video is a little bit low. I you could use 720p it would be very appreciated.
Hi Duke, I will check and see what's gone wrong in the publishing – I am still getting to know my recording tools. ;)
*impatiently waiting for the next part*
Keep up the great work Chris – thanks for sharing
Awesome tutorial – as always, you break everything down step by step and that allows me to actually have something that looks CLOSE if not exactly like what you make.
Thanks for helping me to gain the skills I need to do art I don't feel ashamed to share. :) Keep up the awesome work!
Chris, you are simply THE BEST!!.
I fought seamless patterns night after night without success. You've solved the problem of easy, fast and elegant way.
Thanks a lot.
When is part two coming out ?
Hopefully this week. I have been flooded with work helping out a friend for the past three weeks. The files are all sitting there waiting for me to take the time to record the video and write up the post.
I'm looking forward to it:)
Thanks for this great website with lots of useful tips that make all this design work feel a lot more of a feasible task! Keep up the good work!
Great work Chris. Your tutorials are always awesome. Keep sharing great stuff..
Hi, I just cannot be able to see the images in your website anymore in all tutorials. Please fix!
That's odd… I checked on two computers and my ipad and the images show up all right… Please try again.
Really odd. I'm in Windows 10 and tried with Edge, Firefox, Chrome :(
I am not running Windows 10 (yet) and don't know anyone who does.. Let me write a post and see if others have similar problems.
Thank you.
I'm reading your tutorials on my phone now, a bit inconvenient though
I had a chance to check on a windows 10 machine and neither IE, Firefox nor Chrome had any issues showing the tutorial images.
Thanks Chris for this good and useful tips. Cheers.
Million thanks for the tutorials. Straight to the point. Just awesome!
Chris, we ar all waiting for you to return …
still checking every day for part two :(
