Designing Animated GIF images in Affinity Designer

Affinity Designer Video Tutorial

Animated GIF images are easy and popular to add animation to your designs. In this video, I will work with artboards [much like transparent pages in old-school hand-drawn animation] to create some simple animations. Affinity Designer has no ability [yet] to save animated GIF files. As a workaround, I create a sequence of PNG images that I upload to an online GIF maker instead.

Using external tools

For the GIF animation, I used ezgif. There are a lot of other tools out there – some free, some with subscriptions – as well as standalone programs that can save animated GIFs. If you have a tool or online app you like to use, please leave the name and URL in the comments below. Thank you!

I hope you enjoyed the video and feel inspired to create your own animated GIF. I had fun doing a few myself and used some in this video and others for posts or replies on social media. Affinity Designer is not an animation tool per se, but its vector graphics can be easily manipulated to design short GIF animations quickly and easily.
